Greece: Autumn in Zagorochoria – a journey through nature, flavor, and the soul of Epirus
Greece isn’t just beaches and summer. Sometimes, you only need to turn toward the mountains to discover a different side of the country — quieter, deeper, and more authentic. That’s how our autumn escape began, part of a journey through Northern Greece and Epirus, with a final destination that took our breath away: Zagorochoria.
The route included a relaxing visit to the thermal springs of Aridaia and a few vibrant days in Thessaloniki. But the heart of the trip was without a doubt the mountain villages of Zagori.
Vitsa
After leaving Thessaloniki, we followed the Egnatia Odos highway and arrived in Vitsa in just over three hours. This beautiful village was our home base for the trip. We stayed in a small family-run guesthouse where we were welcomed with genuine warmth. Each morning began with a traditional homemade breakfast — pies, fresh bread, honey, local cheeses, eggs, and seasonal fruit. It was the kind of place where you instantly feel at home. Read more…
From Vitsa, the landscape unfolds like a living painting — stone, forest, and infinite calm.
Autumn had transformed the landscape into a natural painting. The forests and mountain slopes glowed in shades of green, orange, gold, and crimson. With mild temperatures around 25°C, it was the perfect time to explore, without crowds or rush.
Vikos Gorge
From Vitsa, we drove to Monodendri, one of the best-known villages in the region, and from there to the famous Vikos Gorge. At the Oxia viewpoint, the earth opened up before us — raw and vast. The gorge stretched into the distance like a great wound in the mountain. The silence there was profound… until we looked closer and saw a group of highliners walking across the gorge on tightropes, suspended between cliffs. It was absolutely thrilling. Vikos Canyon may be one of the deepest in the world, but it also draws a growing community of slackliners and highlining athletes seeking the ultimate adrenaline rush. Read more…
At Oxia, the earth opens wide. Vikos Gorge stretches beyond imagination — wild, vast, unforgettable.
Later that evening, we returned to Monodendri. Under the warm glow of streetlamps and festive decorations, the village looked like it was already dressed for Christmas.
Aristi
A short drive away lies Aristi, one of the largest villages in Zagori. It’s a great mix of tradition and activity. From there, we went rafting on the Voidomatis River — an unforgettable experience. The water is incredibly clear, almost surreal, and flows through a pristine landscape of plane trees and stone bridges. With Extreme Rafting, the route was safe and smooth — even the kids loved it. Megalo & Mikro Papigko
The road to Papigko was spectacular. As we drove, the Astraka Towers emerged on the horizon — imposing stone formations that define the skyline. Megalo Papigko is a storybook village with winding cobblestone lanes, stone houses, cozy cafés, and sweeping mountain views. Just behind the ridge, Mikro Papigko is smaller but breathtaking. Kolympithres
We stopped at the nearby Kolympithres (Ovires) — natural rock pools carved by water over centuries. In autumn, the pools were mostly dry, but our kids turned the space into a natural adventure playground, jumping from rock to rock with joy.

Each village brought something different to our trip — a new view, a taste, a quiet moment. We tried herb pies with feta, slow-roasted goat, local honey and desserts made with walnuts and wild fruits. The food in Zagori isn’t fancy — it’s soulful, seasonal, and deeply local.
Kokkorou Stone Bridge
On our way between villages, we also crossed the iconic Kokkorou Stone Bridge, one of the finest examples of the arched stone bridges that connect the region’s past to its present.

This journey through Zagorochoria was filled with surprises — nature, stories, and small details that stayed with us long after we left. Whether you visit in autumn, during a snowy winter, or for a cool mountain summer, you’ll find a Greece that’s timeless, alive, and rich with soul.
