Belgium at Christmas: A Magical Evening in Bruges
Bruges is one of those towna that just feels right at Christmas. A couple of years ago, we visited the Bruges Christmas Market and Light Trail with our twins, and it ended up being one of the most memorable evenings of our trip. Between the markets, the chocolate shops, and the beautiful light installations around the city, it had everything we love about winter in Europe — cozy, fun, and full of atmosphere.
If you’re thinking of visiting Bruges during the festive season, here’s how we spent one unforgettable evening — starting at the Christmas market, pausing for pralines at a cozy chocolatier, and finishing with the glowing Light Experience Trail, part of the city’s Winter Glow festival.
A Festive Start: Bruges Christmas Market
We arrived just before sunset and made our way straight to the Christmas market at the Grote Markt. The square was buzzing with stalls, music, and the smell of waffles and spiced drinks. The historic buildings around the square, lit up softly in the fading light, it was magical!

The kids were immediately drawn to the treats (of course), and so were we. Warm waffles in hand, we wandered through the stalls, admiring handmade ornaments, winter hats, and twinkling lights. A smaller market at Simon Stevinplein offered a quieter corner, perfect for a little breather.
Sweet Pause: A Stop at the Chocolatier
After exploring the markets, we ducked into one of Bruges’ famous chocolatiers — the kind where the scent of cocoa wraps around you the moment you walk in. The twins picked out their favorite pralines, while I enjoyed a moment of warmth with a cup of hot chocolate. It was exactly the kind of pause you need before heading back out into the winter night.

Into the Glow: Following the Light Experience Trail
By now it was dark, and the real magic began. The Light Experience Trail, part of Bruges’ Winter Glow festival, was just starting to shine. This free, 3 km trail winds through the city, with 10 unique light installations tucked into quiet squares, along canals, and even hidden alleys.
Each installation felt like a discovery. Some were bold and bright, others quiet and dreamy. A few were playful — the kind kids love to interact with, running around the light patterns or stopping to guess the shapes. One stop had the twins laughing and spinning in circles, while another made us all stop and just… watch.

And because the trail loops through the historic centre, you’re never far from cozy cafés or little corners to take a break if you need one.
Perfect for Families
What I loved most is that everything felt so doable with kids. The trail was just long enough to feel like an adventure, but not so long that we got tired. There was always something around the corner — another light, another surprise — and plenty of snacks along the way to keep energy levels up!
Even better? It’s all free, and easy to follow using the Visit Bruges Light Trail app, which shows the route, times, and info about each installation.
Tips to Make It Even Better
Dress warm: It gets chilly by the canals in the evening.
Go early on weekdays: Fewer crowds, more room to explore.
Use the app: It makes it easier to plan your walk and not miss a stop.
Stay overnight: Bruges is even more magical late at night or early in the morning, when the streets are quiet and still glowing.

A Final Thought
We didn’t do anything fancy that night. Just walked, looked, tasted, and smiled. But sometimes that’s all it takes to make a memory that stays with you — especially when you’re wrapped up in scarves, surrounded by twinkling lights, and holding the hands of two little ones who believe in magic.
If you ever get the chance to visit Bruges in December, don’t think twice. Go — and follow the lights.
