If you’re thinking about exploring the Cyclades, Kimolos in one day might just surprise you. We visited on a spontaneous escape from Milos, with no expectations — and yet, it turned into one of the most authentic and memorable experiences I’ve had in Greece. Yes, Kimolos in one day was short, but it left a lasting impression — and a strong desire to return. Some places catch you off guard — in the best way possible. That’s exactly what happened when I visited Kimolos. What started as a spontaneous one-day escape from Milos turned into one of the most memorable travel experiences I’ve had in Greece. And yes, I wish I had stayed longer.

Before we even arrived, I had heard two versions of how the island got its name. One says Kimolos was named after its first inhabitant — a man called Kimolos. The other links it to the Greek word kimolia (chalk), referring to the island’s pale, luminous cliffs and white stone. During Venetian times, it was called Argentiera, again evoking its signature silvery landscape. However you tell the story, the name fits. This island glows — quietly, naturally, and without trying too hard.

How to Get to Kimolos – Just Across from Milos

We left from Pollonia in Milos and arrived in Kimolos in less than 30 minutes by ferry. The crossing is easy, the water is calm, and the moment you dock at Psathi, the island’s tiny port, you know you’ve arrived somewhere special.

We waited a while for a taxi — in vain. But what a blessing that turned out to be. We rented a car instead, and that gave us the freedom to explore the island at our own pace. Trust me, that flexibility made all the difference.

The Drive to Prassa – Against All Warnings

The rental company warned us not to drive to Prassa beach. “The road’s not good,” they said. But we had the car, and we were feeling adventurous — so off we went. And I have to say: I’m so glad we did.

Prassa was jaw-dropping. That water! A surreal mix of turquoise and crystal green, shimmering in the light. The kind of place that makes you go silent just to take it all in. There was something untouched and raw about it — no overdevelopment, no noise. Just sea, sand, and the sound of your own thoughts.

Chorio – The Heart of Kimolos

From there, we drove to Chorio — the capital of the island. And what a place to get lost in! We wandered through a maze of whitewashed alleyways lined with blooming bougainvillea and pastel shutters. Every corner felt like a painting.

The architecture is exactly what you hope for from the Aegean: white cubic houses, blue doors and windows, charming courtyards, and tiny churches tucked into corners. We grabbed a warm slice of ladenia (a local tomato and olive oil pie) from a small bakery and strolled without any map or agenda.

Much More to See…

Since we only had a few hours, there’s plenty I didn’t get to. Like Goupa, with its rock-carved fishing houses known as syrmata. Or the hike up to Skiadi, a surreal mushroom-shaped rock formation in the hills. There’s also Bonatsa, a long sandy beach perfect for a full beach day, and Aliki, a peaceful shallow bay that invites long, lazy swims.

And then there’s Polyaigos, the uninhabited neighbor island with the most electric blue water I’ve ever seen in photos. Next time, that boat ride is happening.

What I’d Do Differently

If I had the chance to redo this trip, I’d stay at least three days. Kimolos isn’t about ticking sights off a list. It’s about soaking in the quiet charm, letting the slow rhythm of island life sink in, and allowing the day to unfold naturally. It’s the kind of place that rewards slowing down.

 Final Thoughts

If I could do it again, I’d stay at least three days. Kimolos in one day gave us a taste — but this is the kind of island that grows on you the longer you stay. Time to slow down, eat the same meal twice just because you loved it, return to the same beach just because it felt right.

What surprised me most is how deeply one day can affect you. I didn’t expect it — but that’s the magic of travel, isn’t it? Sometimes a single day leaves you thinking about a place long after you’ve left. And that’s what Kimolos in one day did to me.
