Netherlands: The Hague Like You’ve Never Seen It. From Beach Town to Winter Wonderland

If you’ve read my post about The Hague as a beach town, you might be just as surprised as I am by what’s happened this week. Our beloved sunny spot by the sea has been completely transformed. We’re in full winter mode—frozen lakes, deep snow, and an official orange weather code.

No, I don’t live right by the dunes. But even from here, The Hague has turned into something straight out of a snow globe.

Let me take you along for a walk through this chilly magic—complete with trams rolling through the storm and car rides that felt more like adventures.

Frozen Lakes, Quiet Streets & Steaming Coffee

The snow has settled on everything—rail tracks, hedges, and the small lakes in our area, now completely frozen over. From our second-floor window, it feels like the world hit pause and switched to black-and-white.

Code Orange in The Hague: A Little Chaos, A Lot of Beauty

We’re officially under code orange. That means snowstorms, icy streets, and schools staying open but giving parents the option to keep the kids home.

My twins were thrilled for the first 30 minutes. After that? Chaos. Pillow fights, hot chocolate, some failed snowball-making attempts. And yes—I did get out for a bit. A ride on the tram. A (very careful) drive through slippery streets. And a whole new appreciation for Dutch public transport!

Snow Days = Sledding & Surprise Visitors

When the snow eased a little, the neighborhood turned playful. Kids out sledding. Parents in boots. And even the birds were unsure of where the lake ends and the ice begins.

Beach Town No More (For Now!)

You don’t need a coastline to feel transported. This little street shot—with clear tracks in the snow, the blue sky peeking through, and not a soul in sight—was one of the most peaceful moments all week.
