Greece – Zagorochoria: Our route to Vitsa, Aristi, Papigo, Mikro Papigo and Monodendri
During our autumn journey through Zagorochoria, every village we visited left its own imprint. Though close in distance, each one had a different personality, a different rhythm — like pages from the same story told in five voices.

Vitsa through the eyes of a curious cat… or through ours, completely enchanted by the peace of the place.
Vitsa
We started in Vitsa, our home for the entire trip. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Tymfi, the village is a picture of timeless stone architecture and quiet mountain life. We stayed in the small family-run hotel Andromach Beloi where our hosts made us feel like we were staying with relatives.

Morning magic in our Vitsa hotel garden — fresh air, warm light, and local flavors to start the day.
The mornings were something special: a rich homemade breakfast with savory pies, local eggs, freshly baked bread, thick yogurt with honey, and mountain tea. Sitting by the window with the scent of firewood and the view of the autumn forest was the best way to start each day.
Aristi
About 30 minutes away lies Aristi, one of Zagori’s largest and most active villages. It’s a natural crossroad, surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks and deep gorges. We spent time walking through its peaceful streets, and from here we launched one of our most memorable adventures — rafting in the Voidomatis River. With the help of Extreme Rafting, we glided over crystal-clear waters under stone bridges and golden leaves. It was thrilling, safe, and deeply refreshing.

Rafting on the Voidomatis was pure magic — calm, clear waters, golden trees, and the wild silence of Epirus. A moment of adventure and peace all in one.
Mikro and Megalo Papigko
The drive toward Papigko felt like stepping into another dimension. As we approached, the Astraka Towers appeared — tall, wild cliffs that seemed to rise straight out of the earth. Megalo Papigko greeted us with silence and elegance: slate-roofed houses, narrow paths, and glimpses of the peaks around every corner. There’s something majestic about Papigko, like it knows its own beauty but never brags.

In Papigko, every corner is picture-perfect. Narrow paths, stone beauty, and the towering presence of Astraka.
Just beyond the ridge, Mikro Papigko sits quietly, smaller but even more intimate. We felt like we were on the edge of the world. The guesthouses here are carved into the landscape itself, and the silence is so pure it’s almost loud.

In Mikro Papigko, every corner feels like a postcard. A quiet café tucked under flaming red vines — the perfect spot to slow down and breathe in the beauty of Zagori.
Nearby, we explored the Kolympithres (Ovires), natural stone pools shaped over centuries. Though the water was low in autumn, the kids turned the rocks into a park of imagination and movement — jumping, climbing, laughing.
Monodendri and Vikos
We visited Monodendri late in the day, and its stone streets lit up under soft village lights.

Wandering through Monodendri at night felt like walking into a Christmas card — warm lights and mountain calm.
There was a hint of winter in the air, and the atmosphere felt festive, almost like Christmas was around the corner. It’s a larger village, lively even at night, with tavernas open and locals chatting by the fire. And just beyond, of course, lies the entrance to the majestic Vikos Gorge, which we explored the day before. It felt right to pass through Monodendri last — it’s a gateway, both literal and symbolic, to the wild soul of Zagori.
Each of these villages offered something different: warmth, wildness, mystery, elegance, surprise. Together, they shaped our experience of Zagorochoria — not just as travelers, but as temporary locals in a place that feels timeless.

Autumn in Zagorochoria paints the mountains in a palette of green to orange. Every view looks like a postcard.
