We went to Luxembourg. The 7th smallest country in the world but one with the highest GDP per capita. Luxemburgish is the main language spoken which sounds like a mixture of Dutch and German. French is the only language for legislation, however Luxembourgish, French and German are used in everyday life!

What we visited:

Ville Haute, home to historical treasures like the Grand Ducal which serves as the official dwelling for the Grand Ducal family and the Cathedral Notre-Dame de Luxembourg.

Bock Promontory holds a significant place in the history of Luxembourg. The cradle of the city, this rock played a pivotal strategic role. Bock Promontory is nestled within the confines of the Alzette valley. This geographical advantage made the stronghold easily defensible, contributing to its historical importance. Inside the rock, visitors can explore various historic landmarks, including the archaeological crypt and the casemates of the Bock—once utilized as subterranean defence galleries during times of conflict. These great defensive structures and its related underground passages, the bulwarks and the old town of Luxemburg have been marked as UNESCO World Heritage.

Constructed upon the historic Beck bastion is Constitution Square. Dominating the square is the “Gëlle Fra,” symbolising freedom and resilience for the people of Luxembourg.

From Constitution Square, enjoy an amazing panorama of the Pétrusse Valley and the Adolphe Bridge.  The bridge is 153 metres tall and offers a vantage point that captures both natural beauty and architectural splendour.

Chemin de la CornicheThe “Chemin de la Corniche”, often dubbed “Europe’s most beautiful balcony.” Revel in the breathtaking views of the Alzette valley, the Neumünster Abbey and the lower town of Grund. At the end of this picturesque path, you’ll find yourself at the Cité Judiciaire buildings on the Plateau du Saint-Esprit. Opt for the public lift to descend to the Grund district — a locale renowned for its authenticity, calm ambiance and undeniable charm. Explore Its valley location, embraced by the picturesque Alzette River, making it perfect for taking great photos.

Speaking of lifts, the Pfaffenthal Panoramic Glass Elevator offers amazing views, linking the “Pescatore” park in the city centre to the Pfaffenthal area at the base of the Alzette valley,

Totally different to the rest of Luxembourg City is The Kirchberg Plateau which is Luxembourg’s financial hub, featuring an open-air gallery of contemporary architecture crafted by renowned architects. This district houses key institutions of the European Union, including the European Court of Justice, the European Investment Bank, etc

Last but not least is Place d´Armes. Next to the Hamilius tram stop is this pedestrian area full of shops, cafes and restaurants. On the street surrounding the square it’s a shopper paradise with high end fashion brands shops.

In Place d´Armes. at the moment as well as in Place de la Constitution, there are Christmas markets during this Christmas season.

What we absolutely loved:

Tram

The colourful tram that lifts up your spirits even in the moodiest of days. 🙂🙂

The great transport network of the city. Did I mention that is absolutely FREE?

We just came back and we loved the numerous Christmas markets (for example at Place d’Armes and at Place de la Constitution) . It was like an all over city attraction site for the kids and those who are young in spirit!

Specially for children and their families, is Winterkids, where they can participate in organised workshops too.

Christmas Markets Luxembourg

In the markets we appreciated the culinary dishes from all its neighbouring countries from the local ¨judd mat gaardebounen (beans with pork) and the Gromperekichelcher (potato pancakes)  to the French raclette, crepes and tartiflette and the standard German sausages

Our last day closed with a bang. We visited the Kockelscheuer Ice Rink! It was so much fun both for us and the children! The night finished with dancing to some classics and tasting a lot of delicacies to the area next to it

Christmas markets in Luxemburg are open until January 7th.
