Over a decade ago, in a time when my life was simpler yet filled with escapades, two adventurous female friends embarked on a trip that we would remember forever. From the bustling streets of Algeciras, Spain, to the mesmerizing landscapes of Chefchaouen in Morocco, our trip was an story of courage, unpredictable incidents, embracing risks and accepting the unknown.

The adventure kicked off with a decision to navigate the waters, as we boarded a boat from Algeciras to Ceuta in Africa. The sea carried us closer towards our first hurdle. Arriving in Ceuta boarder, I personally found myself uncomfortable as we had to follow a corridor while we were traversing the Spanish-Moroccan border on foot, an experience heightened by the presence of smugglers who added an element of both danger and intrigue.

With each step across the border, we felt a surge of adrenaline, as we were well aware that we were entering a territory out of our usual comfort zone. We were conscious of the potential risks however we were spurred on by the spirit of exploration and a desire to challenge ourselves.

Once on Moroccan soil, we came across with the next issue – negotiating for a taxi to transport us to the enchanting town

of Chefchaouen. The art of bargaining with the locals lent an authentic but rather stressing touch to our trip.

Having believed that all problems were left behind, our taxi ride was momentarily halted by a non-routine police check. We were questioned for the reason of our journey, then they were very surprised to see a Greek woman in a taxi on the Atlas Mountains. The fact that I was speaking Spanish really helped. This encounter added an extra layer of unpredictability to our expedition, yet we faced the situation with grace and humour.

Finally arriving in Chefchaouen, we revelled in our accomplishment. The hotel we chose really did not exceed expectations, however it was offering a comfortable retreat in the heart of the picturesque city. Our Moroccan experience was further enriched by an unexpected offer of “a famous herb” which we actually had to explain why we did not want.

Eager to absorb the charm of Chefchaouen, we meandered through narrow, blue-painted streets, immersing ourselves in the vibrant markets, of exotic spices, and the warm smiles of the locals. Yet, I had to return on my own after a few days, as my friend was going to continue her Morrocan journey with some other friends. It was a difficult moment as I didn’t want to live the same experience as before. So, I negotiated a whole taxi for myself from the town of Tetouan in order to insure nobody else was going to be in it. I passed the boarder with confidence this time. Focused and observant.

From now on, I would know and I would be open to embrace the new and the challenging.
